This time around the smell seems more gentle. Yes, there is a distinct fresh cedar-like smell, but it feels more muted than the first time I tried it. A couple of "cedar" sticks I've tried before had a much sharper tone than this, but the scent is so focused on that one particular character, that I can't even begin to detect other things. If feels like a right aroma for the winter. I won't be buying this one individually any time soon, but I just might do another round of the Premium Sampler as I am finding most sticks on it too complex for me to deal with at this time

Shoyeido Japanese Incense - Premium Incense
Got this stick from the Shoyeido's Premium Sampler. I can definitely detect lots of Alloeswood(it says Agarwood on the ingredient list and I am not sure if there is a distinct difference in terms). The aroma is very thick and somewhat tarry. This might be one of those sticks that should be tried by someone who is less of a novice. I can't get rid of the feeling that I detect the smell of burned plastic :). Surely that was not the intended effect. I've only burned half a stick and will try another half in a few days, to see if the effect is the same.

Even though cedar is not listed as an ingredient, that's what I think I keep smelling on this one. Maybe I am mixing my scents. I don't dislike it, but it almost reminds me of a smell in a woodworking shop or a fireplace, i.e. I find it nothing special and probably won't buy it as a regular stick. I am only burning a half a stick(from the Premium Sampler) for now, and hoping that the second half will surpise me.
